Operating on Your Own

Customers can operate our 13 to 27-foot rental boats on their own, given that the operator meets knowledge and experience requirements. These rental boats are available for experienced boaters to enjoy on their own, without a captain.

In order to rent a boat

We qualify every single customer to ensure that there will be no accidents or injuries on our boats. We take this seriously and make no exceptions. When you book our 21′-27′ bareboat rentals online, you must fill in your prior boating experience.  Include what type / size of boats, how long / where you have boated, details regarding knowledge of reading charts and marine GPS and plotting courses, and ATONs.  If you have not rented from us before, a follow up call to speak to the operator is required with-in 48 hours of payment or we may cancel your reservation.

All renters must meet the following requirements:

  1. The Boat Operator / Renter must be 18 or older
  2. The Boat Operator / Renter must have a valid drivers license
  3. The Boat Operator / Renter must meet our Knowledge and Experience Requirements:
    • Experience with boats 21′ or larger in coastal waters similar to the Long Island Sound (Note: Lake experience is not sufficient to rent any boat other than the 13′ Boston Whaler or the Hobie Cat Wave, available for use in Manhasset Bay only)
    • Knowledge of navigation rules and required safety equipment
    • Knowledge of the U.S. Aids to Navigation System and essential markers
    • Experience plotting and navigating using marine GPS
  4. The Boat Operator / Renter is required to review, agree to the terms and sign the 2021 LIBR Rental Contract & COVID Form. Rental contracts use Adobe Sign electronic signatures and are emailed 24-48 hours prior to rental.
